Safe Jobs for Youth Month Poster Contest, 2008

Winners Announced! Click here to see the winning posters for 2008.

1st prize: $400
2nd prize: $300
3rd prize:
$200

Object of the contest: Develop a slogan or message, using your own words. Choose from one of these ideas to build on:

  • There are special laws that protect teens - make sure you know your rights on the job.

  • Teen workers need to know how to recognize hazards, and speak up when they see something wrong.

  • Employers are responsible for providing a safe workplace and training on how to stay safe at work.

  • If you don't know how to do the job, ask for help. Make sure you know how to do your work safely.

  • Good co-workers look out for each other.

  • Focus on a particular hazard, such as one of the hazards common to teen work places, including slippery floors, hot grease and surfaces, knives, box-cutters, or other sharp tools, heavy or awkward lifting, dangerous machinery, pesticides, and ladders.

Because of copyright, do not use cartoon characters, such as Spongebob Squarepants or Ed, Edd & Eddy.

Keep in mind that your artwork will need to be scanned in order to produce a poster. Before you begin, please explore this young workers website extensively for background information you will need, and additional topic ideas.

Who sponsors the contest?

The Safe Jobs for Youth Month poster contest is conducted by the California Partnership for Young Worker Health and Safety, a statewide collaboration sponsored by the California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers’ Compensation and coordinated by the Labor Occupational Health Program at the University of California at Berkeley.

Recommendations for Protecting California's Young Workers

The California Partnership for Young Worker Health and Safety has released a set of recommendations, "Keeping California's Youth Safe on the Job." This statewide task force includes representatives from 25 different agencies and organizations that play a role in educating or protecting working teens. Recommendations were developed and revised based on input from Partnership members, as well from participants in a day-long public forum held in March 2004, "Young Workers at Risk: Planning for Action." The 33 recommendations highlight policy changes, educational strategies, and enforcement efforts that would improve the protection of young workers in California.
